SERVICES - ARTS BASED THERAPY

What is Arts Based Therapy?

‘Arts-Based Therapy’ is a term that was coined by WCCL Foundation in 2001, to represent the use of multiple art forms (music, drama, visual arts) & their combinations in therapy. In the words of the WCCLF team, “The ABT Course has been one of the first long-term trainings in the field, based within its own cultural and healing context while maintaining a clear practical and scientific connection with contemporary science and its practices.”

Who benefits from ABT?

How could we confine art to just an age group. The rich Indian tradition is testimony to how songs, stories and visual art have been integral to all our festivities be it birth, youth, love, work, death and all that in between. This richness is what makes ABT applicable not only for populations that are at risk but also as a way of engaging in active mental health and hygiene.

Some of the areas which have already been researched are:

• children with special needs
• adults with psycho-social difficulties
• adults with psychiatric illness; anxiety, depression, schizophrenia
• communities at risk - street children, women survivors of domestic violence, rescued girls from trafficking
• abuse
• juvenile homes
• geriatric care
